The Osawatomie Economic Development Committee met Dec. 10 to discuss issues related to the closing of the Osawatomie Correctional Facility and the closing of a portion of the back road connecting John Brown Park to Osawatomie High School.

The highlight of the evening for many attendees was hearing of Auten Pharmacy’s plan to build a 4,000-square-foot building, which would be located on a lot between Brown and Main streets. The pharmacy would have a drive through, something it does not currently have. City Manager Bret Glendening did not give a timetable on when the expansion/relocation is expected to take place.

All committee members saw the expansion as positive and a step to help Auten better compete with other area pharmacies.

The committee remained steadfast in its support of Osawatomie Correctional Facility and the jobs there. Glendening urged each committee member to personally write a letter to the governor requesting that the state reconsider its plans to close it.

Committee member Karen LaDeux requested the city think about cordoning off the back road connecting John Brown Park to OHS or invest in more police patrols in that area.
“I know I’m just one person and one dog, but that place has turned into a racetrack,” LaDeux said.
