John Hatfield knew the third-round dual at Saturday’s Prairie View Invitational between the Buffalos and the Osawatomie Trojans would come down to the final match.

The junior from Prairie View usually wrestles at 215 pounds, but was bumped up to heavyweight, just for this dual. Devon Minckley was bumped from 189 to 215.

It proved to be a chess match between the Osawatomie and Prairie View coaching staffs.

“We knew that Osawatomie could start making changes at 140,” Prairie View coach Walter Vandeventer said. “Depending on what they did, we had to respond accordingly. If they would have left their 152 and 160 in place we would not of moved Devon and John. After they moved, we felt like the best chance to win the dual was to make those moves.”

Osawatomie led 30-27 after Bryan Switzer won by pin at 160 and by forfeit at 171 and 189, but a pin by Minckley just 1 minute, 12 seconds into his 215-pound match gave the Buffalos a 33-30 lead.

Hatfield felt some of the pressure was taken off his shoulders.

“If he would have lost or won by decision, I knew it would come down to the third period,” Hatfield said.
“(Osawatomie wrestler Garry Wilson) was a big guy, and I didn’t know if I was going to be able to keep up with his strength for three periods.”

Hatfleld didn’t need to worry about wrestling Wilson for three periods, but he did find himself trailing. A takedown by Wilson gave him a 3-2 lead in the first period. The match appeared headed for a second period, but Hatfield applied a half-arm bar and half-cruncher to bring Wilson to his back. Hatfield then pinned Wilson with 0.8 seconds remaining to clinch the dual win for the Buffalos.

“I thought he was going to get out of it,” Hatfield said. “I came back and asked Tanner (Stanage). He said it was 0.8 seconds. It shocked me.”

Prairie View 39, Osawatomie 30.

The Prairie View bench and crowd rose to cheer on Hatfield and the rest of the Buffalos.

“Devon and John both came through big,” Vandeventer said. “Duals like that are the reason you coach. It was very exciting.”

Prairie View went on to place second, sweeping all four duals in pool play, opening with a 66-15 win over Anderson County, then defeating Olathe East, ranked No. 9 in Class 6A, 40-30, in the second round, before defeating Osawatomie in the third round and dispatching Coffeyville 69-12 in the fourth round. Osawatomie placed third.

Prairie View advanced to the championship dual for a rematch of last year’s final against Chanute. Prairie View pulled out a thrilling win in 2008, but couldn’t keep up with Chanute, ranked No. 6 in Class 4A, this time, falling 46-14.

Jace Roy pinned his Comet opponent at 103 for a 6-0 Buffalos lead, but Chanute recorded wins in five of the next six matches to take control.

“Chanute has a very talented, senior-dominated team,” Vandeventer said. “I was impressed with how physical both Osawatomie and Chanute were. We have a lot of work to do if we are going to compete at state. There are some teams at our next three tournaments that are just as good as Chanute.”

Hatfield, Roy, Bo Newport (112), Tyler Brown (119), Bronson Moylan (135), Quinton Ford (145) and Nathan Sommer (152) each went 4-1. Minckley, Colton Kral (125), Brett Diediker (130) and Ty Page (140) each went 3-2. Michael Dunlop (160) and Stanage also competed for the Buffalos.

“I thought our team wrestled well all day, with the exception of the last dual,” Vandeventer said.

Billy Teters was scheduled to return Saturday after suffering a broken hand in December but will likely miss another 10 days to allow the injury to completely heal.

Osawatomie went 3-1 in pool matches, opening the tournament with convincing wins over Olathe East 56-24 and Coffeyville 71-12, before falling to Prairie View, but rebounded with a 64-12 win over Anderson County.
A resounding 52-30 victory over Wichita South in the third-place match put an end to a strong day for Osawatomie. Trailing 12-6 entering the 125-pound match, Westin Shay (125), Montana Dunn (130), Sheldon Miller (135), Brant Johnson (140), Dakota Hunke (145) delivered wins to give the Trojans the lead for good.
Shay, Dunn, William Wilson and Zack Grimes each went 5-0. Johnson, Hunke and Brian Switzer each went 4-1. Chance Sinclair, Caleb Lofing, Garry Wilson and Trevor Needham also competed for the Trojans.

“I thought we wrestled hard,” Osawatomie coach Jason Bloodgood said. “We won some good matches, we beat some good kids. We kept after it.”

After being declared ineligible for the first month of the season, Sheldon Miller made up for lost time. He went 4-1 at Prairie View, where he competed at 135.

On Jan. 15, Osawatomie opened the spring semester with dual wins over Burlington, 47-28, and Anderson County, 57-12, at Burlington.

On Jan. 14, the junior varsity team traveled north to compete in a road dual against Mill Valley.

Lofing and Kole Jones won both of their matches by fall. Ryan Macek and Alex Stookey each went 1-1. Joe Gamache was 0-2.
