History was being counted down. Nathan Sommer got his rand raised and walked off the mat at the Bicentennial Center as the first Buffalo in program history to win a state wrestling title. He defeated Ulysses' Derek Newell by a 6-0 decision in the 152-pound championship at Saturday's Class 4A state tournament at the Bicentennial Center. Sommer dominated Newell, hardly allowing him to get off the mat. Sommer scored a takedown 53 seconds into the match for a 2-0 lead, and spent most of the remaining time keeping his hands tightly grapsed around Newell. Bo Newport placed fourth at 112 pounds. He pulled one of the biggest upsets on Friday, needing only a second-period takedown to upend state champion Kenneth Ornelas of Chanute by a 2-1 decision. After losing by a 7-2 decision to Baldwin's Alan Callahan in the semifinals, Newport was relegated to the consolation bracket, but he rallied in the consolation bracket, breaking free of a hold applied by Colby's Nathan Reed for an escape and a 3-2 decision in the ultimate tiebreaker. Newport faced Ornelas in a rematch in the third-place match. It was again decided by one point, but this time, Ornelas recorded an escape with 35 seconds remaining to break a 2-2 tie and held on for a 3-2 decision. Quinton Ford placed fifth at 145. Prairie View finished seventh in the team standings with 67 points.
