The steady rain that pelted Miami and Linn counties for most of this week turned into sporadic showers Thursday afternoon as residents got a chance to survey the damage, hoping the water blanketing roadways and farm land will soon subside.

The Marais des Cygnes River stood at 34.9 feet — several feet above the 28-foot flood stage — next to Osawatomie Thursday afternoon, but the levee was still standing strong. Some residents were dealing with water pooling inside the city, which is sandwiched between the Marais des Cygnes River and Pottawatomie Creek levees.

The flood warning for the Marais des Cygnes River at Osawatomie continues until Sunday afternoon, with the river expected to fall below flood stage Saturday afternoon.

Floodwaters enveloping Kansas Highway 152 west of La Cygne and other Linn County roads prompted Prairie View USD 362 officials to cancel classes Thursday. Superintendent Chris Kleidosty said the ditrict’s schools also will be closed Friday, and all activites hosted by the district will be canceled as well.

The Marais des Cygnes River was at 30.4 feet at La Cygne on Thursday afternoon, blocking the west entrance into town on Highway 152. Residents, though, still had acces in and out of town via routes to the north and east.

The flood warning for the Marais des Cygnes River at La Cygne continues until Monday afternoon, with the river expected to fall below flood stage Sunday afternoon.
