I made a big mistake Sunday. I completely forgot to call my father, Donald. It was Father’s Day. The day I know I need to call him to say thank you for all the guidance he’s provided me over the years. A golfer who took to the links at the Osawatomie Golf Course on Sunday for the annual Jamboree Golf Tournament had to remind me. Still, I forgot. The thought of placing that one phone call and saying the simple words of “thank you” completely escaped my mind. I made it my first priority Monday. I called him and even though it was a day late, my ever so humble and simple-minded father appreciated the thought. My father is at the point where he’s able to enjoy the better things in life. He and my stepmother — my mother passed way in 2001 because of a brain tumor — took a 10-day vacation last year to New Zealand and most recently to Tyler, Texas, to visit a zoo, among other things. My father has worked hard for what he’s achieved. As a child, I remember watching the mental toll an hour-long commute from our house in Westwood, Mass., a suburb of Boston, took on him. Even when I moved to Dallas as a teenager, there was one job in which he had to make the same time commute. At one point, he had to rent an apartment close to work to alleviate the stress. Still, he did his best to make time for our family. Sports were a big part of our household. My father and mother both played sports growing up. My dad never played for the pure sake of competition, more for having fun. His two favorite sports are hockey and soccer. I remember weekend days where I would watch him play defense for our town’s soccer team. They played against other recreational teams from around the area. Growing up in Toronto, Canada, he is by nature, a Toronto Maple Leafs fan. “Go Leafs, Go,” as they say. He and my grandfather took in their share of games at old Maple Leafs Garden, which in recent years has given way to the spacious Air Canada Centre. He was only 2 years old when the Leafs hoisted the Stanley Cup, but their loyal fans haven’t seen one raised since 1967. Hopefully they can start playing better defense and build a “team” which can again raise one for my father. I hope everyone had a great Father’s Day. — David Wolman can be reached at 755-4151 or This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .
