The first few days of July will bring fire and explosions for Osawatomie, as the city and Life Care Center put on community fireworks displays. The city display will begin at dusk Saturday at Lynn Dickey Field near Osawatomie High School at 11th Street and Trojan Drive. Patriotic music by the Band of Oz will accompany the fireworks. City Manager Bret Glendening said the city allocated $2,000 for the display, and that is supplemented by donations from community members. The total cost is usually between $2,000 and $4,000. Glendening said the show is “always good” and lasts a while, with length depending on how many contributions are made. Residents can help fund the event by donating at the city manager’s office at City Hall, 439 Main St. The rain date for the show is Sunday evening. Tonight, Life Care Center will put on a display at dusk at 1615 Parker Ave. A social complete with games and face-painting is scheduled to precede the show starting at 6 p.m. Attendees can enjoy music by the Marvin Family while they chow down on hot dogs, snow cones, watermelon and beverages. The show is limited to smaller fireworks because of nearby construction, but activity director Nicki Pschantz said she’s still looking for a big turnout.
