The biennial Lane High School Alumni Reunion took place June 27 at Central Heights High School in Richmond, with 122 people attending. Lane’s black and gold high school colors and Lion mascot were visible throughout the gathering area. Black and gold tablecloths were accented with decorations that consisted of sunflower garlands, black table mats, gold and black napkins, lions and key chain flashlight favors. Leana Mae Rutledge Janes, class of 1956, designed the decorations, with assistance from the alumni officers. Alumni officers are Mike Kuder, class of 1964, president; Elaine Hills Dyer, class of 1950, vice president; Connie Beets McDaniel, class of 1967, secretary; Mary Hieber Ellis, class of 1955, treasurer; Sue Sutton Crum, class of 1954, board member, and Judy Cole, class of 1958, board member. The Memory Lane History Book, school pictures, annuals, scrapbooks and a memorial book designed and compiled by John Hieber, class of 1954, and his sister, Mary Hieber Ellis, were displayed. Lloyd Hills, class of 1953, gave the invocation. Superintendent Jim Reece gave the welcome for the consolidated Central Heights school district. Cole welcomed alumni and guests. Mike and Tom Kuder were a big hit with the entertainment which involved many of the alumni in the comedy. Crum and Janes planned the afternoon social hour. Dyer and Cole registered the guests as they arrived. L&M Catering, Baldwin City, served the dinner. Fourteen graduates, one teacher and 22 classmates, relatives and community friends who have died since the last reunion in 2007, were remembered in a memorial service. Vernon McKinzie, class of 1954, Lee Ellis, class of 1954, Janes and Crum conducted the inspirational tribute, and McDaniel sang the memorial song, “He’s Everything to Me.” Mike Kuder conducted the business meeting. McDaniel read the minutes from the last reunion, as well as letters and notes from alumni members and classmates who were unable to attend this year. Ellis read the treasurer’s report. June 28 was designated as homecoming for the alumni at the Lane United Methodist Church. The church service was followed by social time and a potluck dinner. The next reunion is scheduled for June 25, 2011, at Central Heights High School. Any Lane High School graduate, classmate or friend is invited to attend the reunion. To be placed on the mailing/e-mailing list, write to Lane High School Alumni Association, c/o Mike Kuder, 931 Plummer, Chanute, KS 66720, or Connie Beets McDaniel, P.O. Box 102, Lane, KS 66042.
