Saturday offered a mix of food, fun and facts at Osawatomie High School, and visitors to the 2010 Kansas Day Festival received their fair share of all three while celebrating the history of the state. As the Band of Oz entertained a gathering of eager attendees, vendors lined the halls to offer a range of wares at the west end of the building. The most popular attraction Saturday was also the most recent addition: a history-themed Kansas Day carnival featuring an array of activities and offering prize-earning tickets to successful contestants. In total, the carnival crew went through nearly all of the 2,000 tickets printed for the event, said Grady Atwater, John Brown State Historic Site administrator. He estimated that the event drew between 200 and 300 people, matching the attendance of recent years. “Considering the weather, it was very good,” Atwater said, adding that he was happy the recent snowfall had not stopped people from showing up. “Kids enjoyed the games. We saw a lot of people from the town enjoying themselves.” In all, Atwater said he was pleased with how the day turned out, noting that he received plenty of positive feedback throughout the day. The combination of culture and fun is always successful, he said. That was a sentiment shared by Linn County resident Pamela Harrington-Hennigh, who brought her child-friendly museum to the festival. Highlighting everything from shoes and a school bell to kitchen utensils, Hennigh’s booth was set up to help children get hands-on with elements of history. “Most of it’s authentic,” Hennigh said of the collection. “I want to get kids interested in history. I want them to understand the importance of their heritage and what their ancestors went through to get to this point.”
