With state assessment tests looming, Osawatomie USD 367 students have been hit by a wave of preparation and extra lessons. Well aware of the pressure these vital exams place on students, Trojan Elementary School Principal Jeff White is constantly reassuring and reminding them that he’s not looking for perfection, but he wants a solid effort. Still, it’s one thing to hear that from a principal, he said; it’s another to hear it from the mascot of a professional football team. In a gymnasium filled with hoots, hollers and claps, students at Trojan recently received a special visit from Kansas City Chiefs mascot K.C. Wolf, brought to life by veteran Dan Meers. After exhibiting some of his usual on-field escapades for the students, Meers stepped out of his second skin to speak to the students as himself, preaching a message of hard work and urging students to simply do their best on upcoming state assessments. “This is your big opportunity to show everyone else in the state of Kansas that some of the brightest and the best students are right here at your school,” Meers told a captivated audience. “Even though it might not seem like a lot of fun, it’s still important for you to do your best.” Meers touched on what he called the Three B’s: be confident, be prepared and be focused. From simply going in with a positive attitude to such common-sense tactics as getting plenty of sleep and a good breakfast before the test, Meers’ advice echoed many of the lessons voiced by district teachers, staff members and administrators. But that repetition helps to drive home the importance of the advice for young students, White said. “It gives them someone else who is encouraging them,” he added. “This is someone they can relate to outside of school.”
