Osawatomie may be gearing up for an aquatic update. After first being brought to light several weeks ago, the possibility of either updating or replacing Osawatomie Municipal Swimming Pool has been the subject of much City Council discussion. On Thursday, the council agreed unanimously that the facility, sporting cracked concrete and an aging infrastructure, is long overdue for an overhaul. Since its inception, the pool has helped countless numbers of people beat the summer heat. It was constructed by a subsidiary of Triangle Builders, but after some investigation, officials determined that the city would be best suited by consulting a company that focuses on aquatic facility update and repair, rather than the original builder. “I think we need to evaluate it so we can make a reasonable decision regarding the issue,” Councilwoman Karen LaDuex said. Other council members agreed to further look into the issue, and they voted unanimously to contract with Wisconsin-based Burbach Aquatics Inc., for an inspection of the city pool in order to determine the proper course of action. Osawatomie City Manager Bret Glendening told council members that for $4,500, Burbach will inspect the facility twice — once in its dry state and again after it is filled and in use — and then will present its findings. Councilman Ted Hunter voiced support in going with Burbach, noting that some other such companies charge a lower rate but are apparently less thorough in their inspections. “That just felt cheap to me,” Hunter said of the other proposals considered.
